Create Abandoned Cart Emails with THEA automation

When a customer fills up their shopping cart but then leaves your shop without buying, it’s helpful and efficient to remind them of their abandoned cart with an automated newsletter after some time. Perhaps, your customer simply forgot to hit “Buy“ or they’re uncertain about whether they really want to purchase the items they’ve put in their cart. Encourage them to complete their purchase with a short notification and quickly and easily grow your sales.

Our latest integrations (*1) allow you to transfer abandoned cart details to CleverReach and send your customers an automated reminder about their abandoned cart with a THEA automation workflow.

Via REST API you can also connect and use the shopping cart abort automation with your shop. For further information and assistance please contact our customer service.

It is important that in both cases you have the GDPR-compliant confirmation to the newsletter from your customers, so that you can send the abandoned cart emails automatically.


Please establish a connection between your shop system and CleverReach by using one of our plugins. Click here for instructions on how to establish a connection with Shopify.

Settings in the Shop Plugin:

After successfully installing the plugin in your shop system, you’ll receive all the details you need on the dashboard of the CleverReach plugin page in your shop system. Among other things, you can find the tab "Abandoned Cart" for the „Abandoned Cart Emails“ on your dashboard:


Here you can activate the “Abandoned Cart Emails“. Please note, that all abandoned cart emails of your shop will be deactivated as soon as you activate the CleverReach “abandoned cart emails”:


In case, any other „abandoned cart emails“ are still activated, you receive the following notification on your dashboard:


On this dashboard you can also see whether the THEA campaign in CleverReach is active or inactive, you can activate the workflow, edit the automation email or schedule the time and date to send out your abandoned cart email. You have the following options to choose from:

Send your email after: 

  • 1 hour
  • 3 hours
  • 10 hours
  • 24 hours

For example, Shopify recommend sending your abandoned cart email after 3 hours, depending on the product. It’s very likely that the customer is still interested in buying and has probably not yet covered their requirements and ordered elsewhere.


Set up THEA Automation in CleverReach

You can also set up the abandoned cart automation on your own in your CleverReach account. When you activate the Abandoned Cart feature in your shop system, a THEA workflow is automatically created for you in CleverReach for sending "Abandoned Cart Emails". In CleverReach, you don’t only find the prepared automation workflow but also an email template we have prepared for you to customize with just a few clicks and send it to your customers.

The icon for abandoned carts emails in THEA look like this:


When you click on “Activate“ in your shop system, the feature will be activated. In the next step, you have to activate the THEA automation and you’re automatically forwarded to the automation workflow in CleverReach:


With only just a few clicks you can adjust the email in the campaign to your design and quickly and easily get your customer’s attention back to their filled shopping cart. Click on the pen above the letterhead symbol. A window will then open in which you can select the mailing you want to send:


Click on “Edit“ to edit your newsletter:


The template already contains the following variables, which are automatically filled with the respective data (e.g. item name, item ID, description) when the abandoned cart email is sent:

Shop variables:

{AC_STOREID} - ID of the shop

{AC_URL} - URL of the shopping cart

{AC_TOTAL} - Total amount of the shopping cart

{AC_VAT} - Amount of sales tax

{AC_STORELOGO} - Your Shop Logo

{AC_CURRENCY} - the currency in the shopping cart

{AC_CARTITEMS} - Item in the shopping cart with the following information:


Article variables:


{ID} - Article ID

{SKU} - SKU of the article

{NAME} - Item name

{DESCRIPTION} - Article description

{AMOUNT} - Number of articles

{IMAGE} - Article picture

{SINGLEPRICE} - Unit price




Please note that when you preview the newsletter, your articles are not yet displayed:


The inserted variables are automatically filled with the information only when the newsletter is triggered or sent.

With just a few clicks you can customize the newsletter for your recipients. When you’re done editing, please save your newsletter. The window closes after saving.

The next step is to activate the THEA workflow. Click on “Inactive“ in the top right corner to switch to “Active”. You can then see a pop up for security check and activating the automation:


Now all customers are automatically contacted via newsletter, who have left your shop without completing the checkout process.

If you no longer want your recipients to automatically receive your abandoned cart email, you can simply switch the workflow from "Active" to "Inactive".

By the way: On the CleverReach dashboard in your shop system you can click on "Edit Email" and automatically end up in the editor for working on the abandoned cart email in CleverReach.

THEA Report Data for Evaluating Your Success:

Our THEA report lets you monitor the performance and success of your abandoned cart campaign. You can assess the standard CleverReach figures: „Delivered emails, opens, unopened, clicks, unsubscribes, bounces“.

There’s also the connect link extension that allows you to evaluate the purchases via a mailing with CleverReach. You can evaluate the following data:

  • Generated Orders
  • Generated Sales
  • Order Rate

As an alternative, you can also use the Google Analytics Integration to evaluate orders, sales, etc.


Please note:

  • Currently, only our official Shopify, Magento 2, Shopware 5, WooCommerce and Shopware 6 plugins support the features above.
  • via REST API you can also connect your shop and use the shopping cart abort automation - please contact our customer service
  • You can only use one automation workflow per integration. If you have several shops, you can create a THEA automation workflow for each shop.
  • If you want to use our abandoned cart features, you have to deactivate the abandoned cart emails of your shop system.
  • You can only send abandoned cart emails to active recipients in CleverReach from whom you have the consent according to the GDPR
  • The total net amount of the shopping cart must be more than 0.00 Euro to send the email
  • If there are several abandoned carts by only one customer, only the first one is tracked and transferred to CleverReach.
